My name is Liz Coll and I’ve worked in consumer rights and advocacy in the UK and internationally for over 13 years. In that time I’ve seen the rise of powerful, social digital technology transform our relationship to companies, products and each other. I’ll be using this space to reflect on these changes, think about what’s coming next and explore how people can uphold their rights as citizens and consumers in this environment.

I’ll write about the things that don’t always get attention from the consumer protection perspective, like online manipulation, discrimination and the links with our experience as citizens. I’ll also look at what new trends like dark kitchens, the subscription economy and the do-not-touch transactions of a covid-19 hyper-hygienic world might mean for us as consumers.

I’ll be digging deeper into some issues that we find ourselves grappling with like AI, data and privacy from a consumer perspective, and checking in on some of enduring assumptions about digital technology to see if they hold true.
